Welcome to Michael Stephan's Tuba Site!

Michael Stephan currently serves as the Principal Tuba for the Orchestra of Indian Hill, Santo Domingo Festival Orchestra, Cape Ann Symphony and as acting principal tuba of the Manchester Music Festival and Glenn Waters Music Festival. An active freelance musician, Michael has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Boston Ballet, Pittsburgh Opera, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic, American Symphony, New World Symphony Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Naples Philharmonic, Albany Symphony, Boston Philharmonic, West Virginia Symphony, Vermont Symphony, South Florida Orchestra, and many orchestras across the East Coast. He has also held principal and acting principal positions with the Berkshire Symphony, Youngstown Symphony, Canton Symphony, Boston Civic Orchestra, and Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra.

His charismatic personality, versatile performance experience, and desire to share his passion for music taken him on extensive performance tours of Switzerland, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Brazil, Venezuela, England, Scotland, Wales, Portugal, Spain, Canada, the Dominican Republic, and throughout the United States. Michael has worked as adjunct faculty at Duquesne University, Amherst College, and Williams College. He has coached numerous youth orchestras from around the world and continues to share freely his talent and love of music with the people in his community through outreach and free concerts as well as nursing home, hospital, and grade school performances.

Stephan earned an Artist Diploma from Duquesne University, a Master's in Music from New England Conservatory, and a Bachelor of Music from UMass Amherst. Michael is an active member of the Boston Local 9-535 Musicians Union. He maintains a private studio, offering lessons to low brass students of all ages in the New England area, all over the world (via skype) and is often hired to perform at a wide variety of events, featuring musical styles as diverse as orchestral, chamber, new music, brass band, Dixieland, Christian, ragtime, jazz, pop, marching band, and more. In his spare time, Michael loves to ride bicycles, camp, hike mountains, and drive.
